If someone has already posted this, I apologize but I've never seen it & I thought with all the people that work with silver...they might be interested. I'm seeing alot of oxidized silver jewelry & wanted to give it a stab. I found out how to do it without using harsh chemicals. Ya just got to boil some eggs!!! How cool is that? beading.consumerhelpweb.com/basics/reference/oxidize.htmI tried this the other day with some very thin sterling hoops & it really worked well.

I tried this method on a ring. I liked the results but then I wanted to see how it would clean up so I tossed the ring in silver cleaner which removed all of the oxidization. Also, I may not have left the ring in the bag long enough. This was the only time I tried oxidizing silver so I don't know if chemically oxidizing silver is more permanent.

I tried the boiled egg for oxidizing on a wire wrap. It took a lot of time to clean out the egg between all the wraps and the oxidization didn't stay. It didn't seem like a very permanent condition. If you have any suggestions on making the finish more permanent would love to hear your advice. I usually get better results with liver of sulfur.

That is still a cool idea, I wonder if it would make a difference if your eggs were old or fresh afterall what is the smell of rotten eggs. Tami

I just use LOS & it works great for me. I don't think that it's terribly toxic, just have good ventilation & keep it off your skin as a precaution.

I think if you were to add a coat of schelac to it when you are done it might preserve the oxidation, but you have to be careful to keep it off the stone. Not sure since I've never done it, but it might work. Steve
