I picked up this chunk at the yard sale too. I don't know what it is, but I'm thinking some kind of wonderstone. It's pretty cool stuff with the black in it. I've cut the stone on end, then turned it on it's side, and than rotated it once again. I've been able to get some nice slabs, and I wanted to see how the stone changed as I cut it in different directions. I'm still cutting through the rock, and the last pic was the last cut of the night. It looks like a profile of a Raven to me. What do ya'll think?? Thanks, Steve

I'm not sure what it is either but I sure like it. That Raven looks kinda ominous to me. Very cool!

Discounting the outer "orange" area, it looks just like the inside of the petrified "bog" wood I got from southforkmining a while back. Most of the pieces looked like that - greyish brown outside, solid black inside, and round like that.

Steve - It is polycrome from Madagascar. The newer stuff looks a bit different and they are calling it Desert Jasper. www.madagascarminerals.com/cat_desert_jasper_jewelry_products.cfmDesert Jasper Jewelry box. Length : 14cm (5.5inch) Width : 10cm (3.94inch) Heigth : 4cm (1.57inch). Previously we called this stone Polychrome Jasper. You will receive 1piece of Desert Jasper jewelry box similar to what is photographed with this order $225. For more information, please call a Madagascar Minerals sales I think it will polish pretty good. I have some 5x7 in slabs that came from Madagascar and have to be from nearby. They are less black in the center and also some shades of green in with the pink, but seem very similar to me - and they come form the same place. Very scenic.

Hi Steve, I think what you have there is called Salinus Wonderstone. I have a couple of small slabs of it and it has the black in the center. Not sure of the spelling. Daniel

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! Given where you acquired it, I'd say wonderstone too. Hope it takes a killer polish!
