;DYeah...My Mountain! ;D
I was asked to be somewhat of a tour guide for a hike today. The 3 guys I went with actually bought one of my brother's and my books, and wanted a tour guide. I really guess I should start charging for my services...but I didn't. It's almost too much fun for me to want to charge anybody for taking them up hiking. We started up the mountain at 6:30AM The particular canyon we were hiking has 2 mines in it. One is Napoleon Maghera and the other is Tunnel #1. The Napoleon goes back over 1800' in solid rock. Tunnel #1 is collapsed but it had gone in 1200' with a shaft being sunk which had reached the 120' depth. There was a aerial tram put in around 1905 to service the mines. Here's 3 of us right at the start.
This is actually one of the 1st buckets you reach. there are several others scattered througout the canyon, and many of them have the whole set-up. Arms and wheels which held them on the cable.
We ran into 3 of these bad boys today. I hate these and ticks!
It's about a 2 hour hike to the 1st mine. We went in of course! There is ankle deep water throughout most of it, but it actually felt pretty refreshing. The walls are very dirty with over 100 years of dust and dirt accumulation. Here's some shots of what the walls look like after taking a hammer to them and getting to the host rock. Lots of Quartz, green clay, and this really gorgeous red rock.
and here's a shot on the way out...looking towards the entrance. note how dirty the walls are!
To reach tunnel #1 you have to climb an amazing rock slide that occured who knows when. I thought it would be cool to take a pic of the guys coming back down. Can you see all 3 of them??
It was fun filled and all my clients ;D made it out safely with no twisted ankles, broken bones, stitches, snake bites or tick nestings. I needed this hike desperatley. It felt great to get back out and become a billy goat again.
