Were you able to hear any of the speakers? I hadn't realized it was actually a seminar for $75, you could go to hear all these expert speakers on different types of agates, and also view all the wonders. It was just half an hour from my home, but I didn't go due to not being able to hear the speakers I wanted to talk with. I wonder if that part was worth $75--anyone know?

Slydog – It was well worth the cost, and more. Late Wednesday afternoon, we stopped by to register on the way into town. The dealers were setting up in the gym, and a lot of the special exhibits were being put together . . . time to start huntin’ for aggies!! ;D Got a real nice Bot nodule from an elderly couple. And then this younger dealer shows me an awesome Laguna slab with about a gazillion bands and unbelievable shadow. He can’t sell it to me cause he’s gonna put it in his special exhibit, so I asked him to let me have first dibs on it at the end of the show. Well, it didn’t go in the exhibit. Saw him again Friday and he handed it right to me. Some Germans had wanted to buy it but he honored my first dibs. Thursday, the symposium part, was just for people that registered. About 14 speakers and I skipped one. I can only think of one that got boring. My wife sat through them all too and enjoyed it. There were more presentations Friday and Saturday (3 or 4 each day) and they were open to anyone. Just about everyone that gave a talk was around for the entire show, and easy to find if you wanted to talk to them. And what rock nut doesn’t wanna talk? Sorry you couldn’t make it down. (We drove from Connecticut.) Rich

Rich, What fun for you, I am SO jealous! So, here are a few questions.
Did you get to meet Ricardo and Claudia? Or just see their amazing agates? What was the most interesting thing you learned? What did you NOT buy, but now wish you had bought? (You could buy stuff, right?) What would you have bought, if you had an unlimited budget? What was your absolutely favorite display? Why?
Thanks so much for all your pix! What a wonderful experience for you.
And yes, still sitting here and trying to picture your 1st dibs agate!

Rich, thanks a million for your reply--obviously I was a dam fool for not going. Unfortunately, that's not the first time I've displayed that behavior-----

Karen – Talked to Ricardo and Claudia a few times throughout the show. They had a case of Argentinian agates in the exhibit area, and quite a large selection in the dealer room, more than I expected to see. Also met rockman69 from eBay and Gene Mueller from the Gem Shop. Both gave talks at the symposium and were exhibitors and dealers.
No regrets about not buying something - pretty much got what I wanted. But I should’ve tried to hit up Brad Cross for a copy of his out-of-print The Agates of Northern Mexico. ;D
As for interesting, the mining of coconut geodes comes to mind. Most of the Mexican goodies (Laguna, Agua Nueva, Coyamito) and the geodes come from a relatively small area in the Chihuahua province. The seam where the geodes are found is tilted. So when an area gets played out, they have to keep going deeper to follow the seam. They’re now going down 200’ holes to where they can dig out the geodes!!! And most of what they bring up are rejects, cause they’re solid and have no value – there’s mountains of rejects!
All this effort for geodes didn’t make sense to me, how could it possibly be worth it? I mean, they’re ok, but I wouldn’t buy one. Apparently, there’s enough demand (like when you see them being split at every rock show you got to) to justify all this effort down a 200’ hole.
Best display? Maybe the Australian aggies (first pic, above).
Rich
