On Thursday morning we were in Klamath Falls, Oregon. We went to my mom's gravesite early and then I visited with my brother for a while. Then we set out going West to Medford to visit my uncle (the one who got me started on my rock addiction many, many years ago). When we left there we headed for Crescent City on the Northern California coast. Just before we got there we stopped at a rocky shore of the Smith River. Lots of extraordinarly ordinary rocks. Great for skipping across the water but nothing else.
On the bank of the river was a redwood "sapling" At his head height it was about 18 feet in diameter! This is the land of the giant redwoods.
We got to Crescent city in the early afternoon. The high temperature for the day was 59 degrees, a far cry from the 102 in the Central Valley! It was cold, foggy, windy, overcast, etc. The indoor heated pool wasn't heated! My grandson tried swimming after supper but it was way too cool. He took a hot shower and we went bowling instead.
The next morning we went to the aquarium and got to pet some real sharks (thankfully not the viscous kind).
Just South of the city is a tourist location called Trees of Mystery. Their main attractions are wierd growths of redwoods, a giant Paul Bunyon and Babe the Blue Ox and an American Indian museum.
Here's Paul and the Blue Ox.
Here is a picture to show the perspective of the size of the Blue Ox (my grandson chose the location, not me).
Another perspective.
After my dad died I donated some of the Indian artifacts that he found on the farm to the Indian museum.
After we left there we drove toward Eureka, CA. On the way we had some great views of the ocean. If you squint real hard you can see it 500 feet below.
Looking a little to the left. Same beautiful view.
.
About 20 miles South of Eureka we came to our final destination - Chapman's Rock Museum, near Fortuna.
A gigantic yard full of rocks!
The old wing of the museum.
How's this for some Graveyard Plume?
Some Cary Plume.
Some Laguna Agate.
Some more Carey plume.
An Amethyst geode.
In the store showroom.
The new wing.
And finally my favoritre piece of Obsidian.
Thank you for your patience with my babbling. I hope you enjoyed the adventure as much as we did. We'll never forget it!
