These are macro shots of a slab of agate/jasper I cut from a rock that came in a load of "green zebra agate" from Astrogallery. The first shot covers an area about 0.75 inch wide. The rock appears to have fractured into slices at various times in history; these slices then shifted relative to each other, and then healed. And then the process was repeated along different planes of fracture several times, resulting in the kind of quilt-work you see in the second image.

Thanks! I use a Canon 5D with either a 50mm prime lens or a 28-135, with various lengths of extension tubes (Kenko). I don't have a ring flash at the moment, so these are cable triggered on the tripod with ambient light, which means 10-30 second exposures usually.

Yikes, long exposure. Sounds like this is a full manula SLR?
How are you controlling glare from the flash?

jb welcome to RTH. Your pictures give new meaning to "up close and personal". Thanks for a veiw that many don't have a chance to experience. Looking forward to more if you are so inclined

Thanks for all the positive feedback! I'll definitely post more as I have time to do them. My setup is pretty primitive at the moment too, and this is my first foray into macro work, so hopefully the results will improve technically over time.
KD, cool avatar!
Deb, right now I'm shooting in full manual. The Canon 5D is a full frame dSLR, so that helps a lot in terms of gathering enough light. At the moment I'm not using any flash at all since I don't have a ring flash, but I'll try my normal outboard flash and see how that works. These are unpolished slabs; I wet them with methanol, which has a really low surface tension, and I think thus give less specular reflection than water. i don't know, I'm making it up as I go....
Heh, I was just now handed a postal box with dino bone slabs in it, so maybe that's next!

These are amazing - I love the close shots you're getting, especially knowing that all of that is happening within 3/4".
