Can I wire an on off switch to an electric dryer motor and use it to build a polisher?

I tried it and the motor burned up in less than an hour. It might have just been bad though, the dryer cost $20 at a yard sale.

If the motor runs at 1750, you can if... You have to make a pulley set up. The motors have very little torque. They need pulleys to achieve results. Operating directly off the motor, stalls will occur if the load is too high.

check out surpluscenter.com. you can pick up a new 1HP motor for $40, 1/2HP for $20.
Pump motors come with a 3/8-16 or 1/2-20 thread and CW rotation can take a Drill chuck for instant grind or polish. Again, only $40.

I use a washer motor to power my arbor. I like it because it is a two speed so I can slow it down to 1100 or so if I want to. I just wired straight to a 3 prong plug and plug in my lights then the motor when I want to grind. Been running like a charm for a year or so, several hours at a time on avg. I could put in an inline switch if I wanted but when I'm ready to turn it off I am ready to quit. So I unplug and go. Tony
