Okay, it's time to play "What Am I" again. ;D My hopeful guess is obsidian. The photos don't show the face very well but it's pitch black, very slick, very glass-like (IMHO). Then there are those cool ivory & brownish streaks... Photos taken DRY. Back (rough but still feels slick) So whaddya say? Nancy

Don't think it's obsidian. Colors, general look and pattern don't look right. I'd guess some kind of chalcedony/agate, maybe even agatized wood of some kind....Mel

I was thinking Agatized Wood myself. I collected a piece similar to that from Saddle Mtn. a few weeks ago. Steve

I would say that it's petrified bog. I find stuff that looks very similar around my neck of the woods and it usually has small pieces of wood, roots, twigs and any other type of organic matter that happened to be in bog. Most of the time if you are finding this material you should encounter some very nice agatized wood also. I actually have some currently in my tumbler and it is some of the best looking pieces in the barrel.

For my two cents worth, it looks to be opalized wood. Woody

If you found it on the beach in Central Calif. it could be petrified oil. Grind it a little. The smell will tell you right away. It smells like an oil refinery. Bob

Nope - no smell at all. I guess I'd rather it be pet wood than pet oil! lol I remember one time we went down to Refugio Beach (looking for shells) and there was oil everywhere - it was disgusting. It was thick and extremely sticky and we were weeks getting that crap off our shoes. GAG!
