Hi all,
I gave my mom-in-law a Regency rose plume agate pendant a year or so ago. The other day she hinted at wanting matching earrings. Ok, it wasnt a hint. She said "it would be nice to have a matching pair of earrings". LOL Pretty strong hint if you ask me. So now I know what I will be making her for Christmas.
My question is...........when making earrings, do you usually make them exact replicas of each other? As in, should I cut two identical slices and make the earrings exactly the same or would I make them using different pieces of Regency, as long as the colors are fairly similar?
Please dont say its personal preference because I cant decide!!! LOL Im just wanting to know what would look the best. Ideally, I would have liked the earrings to be made out of the same slab as the pendant but that one was just a small one cab sized piece.
Thanks,
Shannon

I think if color and patterning are similar, then two different slabs is perfectly okay. For instance, a co-worker wants earrings to match the RSJ pendant she purchased from me. In this case, the cab was cut to capture a scene...and there's no way that scene can be captured in miniature two additional times. For her, I made earrings that were RSJ in a similar color and that were fairly well matched with each other (rather than the pendant).
So I guess my stance is it's very difficult to exactly match three pieces for a set, and you're lucky to be able to exactly match two pieces. I strive for general shape, pattern and color in my sets.

Same here. It is more important to match the two earings as close as you can and it will look fine with the pendant as long as all three are generally the same.

Weeshan: For matching ear ring stones, choose colour/pattern matching pieces, flatten the backs, and glue them together then cab them like a double sided cab. The old standby glue for this was waterglass (sodium silicate) but you could use epoxy, and then seperate the two halves with acetone. It usually works best to dop from the ends in turn instead of the front/back. Woody

I agree with the others...and when wrapping the earrings...what you do to one...turn around and do the same thing to the other. Go back and forth with each step. This helps to get them very close to looking the same.

a friend of mine uses a thicker slab, cuts it in half and then makes the earrings....... perfect match. If you can't do that, then as close as possible will look great.
