I proudly displayed some finished moss agate rocks (smaller size) in a glass bowl at my house over the holidays. People would do the obvious thing and run their hands through the rocks and oh and ah. I just noticed that many of them now how chips and markings that weren't there before Questions- Does this happen with some finished rock and not others? And, is the polish like a veneer so if I go back to phase 2 or 3 I can get the rocks back to beautiful without losing more size? Thanks for helping.

My advice would be to deal with the eyesore and prevent futher abuse on future batches. Fragility does depend on rock type but you really just need to make sure poeple are gental with them.

Welcome to the board.
I am surprised that your moss agate was damaged - maybe it was interlaced with veins of something softer and this is where the chipping occured?
Getting rid of deep chips will mean an 80 grit tumble followed by a full cycle.
Tumbling at stage 1 is the only way to realistically get rid of REALLY deep chips (say half a millimeter). A single charge should do it - but it depends on the depth.
After doing an 80 - the only wayto get the shine back is to do the next three phases aswell. (unless you let it ride and skip to the pre-polish after the 80 degrades to nothing - usual thing).
I would buy some more moss agate and then pop the damaged stones in a final 80 charge to boost the mass for the batch after most of the new stones wear away.
But then again I just buy buy buy until Ive got stones coming out of my ears!!!
Andy.
