So here is a pick of this black stuff I call coal, found on the beach and very light weight, and beside it a similar rock but with amazing colors. So now I’m confused. I thought it might be peacock ore but I don’t know if peacock ore occurs in MA. Then I thought it might be coal that sat in a puddle with oil as that’s what the colors remind me of but the rock is not oily. If anyone has an idea what it might be please do tell. I had to get a closer look at the colors so I grabbed my loop and while I was looking, came across the tiniest crystal cluster so I zoomed in as much as I could and then put the loop over the lens. Took a bazillion pics to get the best shot possible. I got in so close that if my hand shook, I experienced vertigo. Honest to god, not kidding. Once I got the best shot, I cropped the pic to get even closer. What the heck are these crystals?. Looks like iddy biddy baby quartz but do quartz crystals grow on coal? I would love any thoughts on this but most of all hope you enjoyed looking.

Man, that's got me stumped. Peacock ore I've seen is very heavy. What you have is very pretty anyway....Mel

It is very light weight so that would rule out Peacock ore. It doesn't scratch with a steak knife and it streaks black on the flip side of my porcelain toilet tank cover.
Steve, I think you might be right about salt crystals as many in the pic have similar structure as salt does. The obvious tends to elude me ;D.

no it's just as heavy. well that was just a guess i have no more guesses on what it is. pretty stuff anyway... do you plan on cutting it open? if the oil turns a red color then that would be a good indicater that it is hematite.....

cina, the colors in your pic sure look the same, but if my rock were hematite, it would be much heavier. Thanks for the pic, I never heard or have seen Rainbow Hematite.
lynskyn, I can't cut it, it is just too pretty. I really think the black one and the pretty one are the same but maybe the pretty one went through some kind of chemical reaction or change to something. If I find a puddle with oil in my driveway, I'm going to put the plain black one in it and see if it takes on any color. (this is so newbieish...lol.)
Thanks for your thoughts and for looking

LOL.. sorry still laughing about the vertigo comment .. *smiles* anyways.. I've never seen anything like that before! And Yeah don't cut it.. way too pretty! But I swear that second pic I see a few eyes looking back at me... so maybe it's alien? *smiles*.. just kidding.. but to be honest that second picture does have me taking double takes.. cuz it looks like there's a drawing on it.. or just could be the lighting.. or the that i've been out in the sun too long.. lol.. But..maybe it's been heat treated. like through a fire or something.. either way it sure is a Keeper !! But if you ever feel like selling it.. let me know! lol.. cool pics!
*smiles*
