Since i have been on the site all you hear out of me is shop talk and how to do, Well i Do Lapidary now & then, in forty plus year`s of rock hunting i tend to take more breaks lately. Old friend sold this flat Lapp to me for $100.00, Well if you want it made right have a Mill-Wright make it for you, This machine is over kill Allen Bolts on every thing and the pillow block bearing`s are 1" 3/16, on the main shaft. Lapp plate 178 RPM, I can lean on the plate with a large rock and it well not slow down. The plate is 18" Slow i can use the Magnetic diamond pads on it. Yes I know it is to slow for Diamond pads as it is now ! Jack

Jack,
Nice Lapp, looks like a great piece of equipment. Over kill is not a bad thing. If a little is good, a lot is better, and too much is just enough.
I’ve never used a Lapp, but if they work the way I think they do, I’d sure like to try one. Can you (or anyone) recommend any good ones on the market in the 8” to 12” size? Must come with good instructions ‘cause I know nothing.
If 178 RPM is too slow, what’s the optimum speed?

Garrett, diamond pacific makes a 18" Lap ( Diamond pads ) & a cast iron lap in 12" / 18" , they are listed in the www.diamondpacific.com catalog. no listing on RPM on the two. their is a company that makes large laps. like the 48" spinning laps and the 36" though there about 160 RPM. in my area a few people have them though they were home made as they cost $1200.00 a Foot to build. Garrett, the RPM on mine for the cast iron is right, Though on diamond it should be around 250-280 RPM. Laps in the 8"-12" ( RPM for this size 420 -650 )size is best to buy a Lap plate from a facet machine and mount it on a shaft. our buy a flat lap plate for a shaft from a wood working shop, ( like MARK-5 ) wood working machine and ( In cast iron ). The old Rock-wells ( Belt - disk combos ) with the 12" disk I`d like to fine one and turn it in to a out door dry sander. Sear`s use to sell these plate for tools they dealt with. ?. though it`s been 3 decade`s since the old day`s. !!! Garrett good luck Jack
