Glad you were able to get out and have some fun. Looks like you found some nice stuff too. I really like the Brain rocks. I'd keep it as is. Steve

Nice finds! Cut the brain down the middle and use it for bookends. At least then you can see if there's anything inside! I happen to have a "brain" rock from somewhere in Arizona that someone gave me...let me take a picture. (does anybody know what this is?) It's been tumbled a bit, but you can still see drusy quartz around the bubbles, the whole thing must have been covered in druse before tumbling. The little pips of red in the center of each bubble are a mystery to me! How'd they get there?

88pathoffroad, Your piece looks like Youngite. It can have either a pinkish or yellowish interior. That Calif. desert stuff is sure wild. Bob

Well, actually, it was somewhere particular, just not where I'd originally planned.
See, I set-out to find a place that a local had told me about that was supposed to be down near Shoshone, but didn't find it. Since I was already that far, I decided not to waste the trip and went much further, to a particular place that I'd studied a little bit and had piqued my curiosity. Although I didn't find "the main attraction" there (I didn't know about it), I'm happy with what I found and had a great day. Since learning much more about the area, I'll definately be going back there, preferably for two or three days, and hopefully I can find someone who's loco enough to go with me. ANY TAKERS?

Girl, you aint SEEN dirty and sweaty! You forgot bloody and exhausted. Just think ... that's my idea of FUN! My vehicles get abused, my clothes get shredded, and I'm grinnin ear to ear. That's why I said "hopefully I can find someone who's loco enough to go with me". My idea of hounding aint no hand-holding skip through the park, I get down and dirty. My biggest pack holds about 100 pounds of rock. Last week, I had it full, also holding rocks in my arms, and hiked about a mile back to my truck with it all. I took it a little easier after that LOL.
YO ... RODNEY ... YOU OUT THERE? I bet he can relate. Hehehe.

Nice finds MJ. Any chance of just a little more detail than "strange, desolate area of the CA desert" since that describes quite a bit of the territory between Mammoth and Panama ;D

Hey MJ, Sounds all to familiar! Nice finds you have there. It's the prospecting part I enjoy the most. I love reading your adventures. Rodney

Hehehe ... yeah, well, when I finally find something, I tend to get a little excited. There really aint much around here, so I gotta savor every little victory I get LOL.
I think I just have way too much fun gettin rock to stop and take the time to polish it up and make it pretty. Plenty of folks here who do a fine job of that.
Still waitin for ya to come back up this way. I wanna get back out to that place real soon (before the nights get much colder) to do like 2 or 3 days of exploring/hounding/camping, and you're more than welcome to join me. I asked Brian (beef) if he's interested but haven't heard back from him yet. It's a pretty cool place as long as you're not violently opposed to burro shyte LOL. Be happy to PM you more info if you might be interested.
