The patterns AND the colors are out of this world! Thanks for the great eye treat! It would be interesting though to see how big are these paterns in real. I mean are they discerneble by eye, looking rather normally at the rock?

Adrian: Yep, they're easy to spot with the naked eye as the magnification I've used in the pics is not all that strong....Mel

1) Blow up the pix to about 2' or 3' across. 2) Get them professionally printed and framed. 3) Sell them for big bucks as fine art. 4) Profit!
Nice stuff!

Those are great but I thought by the title the Cady area was being closed. There have been rumors of the East end closing for some time.

Don't think any of it is closed yet but just give the Democrats a few months. Feinstein and company want to shut down the entire desert ( even the Hauser beds down south) to satisfy their green followers. Shoot, in the forty years I've been going out there, most of the good areas are already closed now anyway. Think they're talking about expanding a few military bases too which doesn't help...Mel

Mel: This is some really nice material! My wife, and I spent half a day in the Cady Mtns the week before Thanksgiving. We parked near the old mine, and got a bout a quarter of a mile up the hills, and found some pretty nice material, but I think not as nice as this. My best find, mostly agate with red/green/yellow in it was the size of a foot locker, and too damned far for our rig. I left it there. (tears) I have not yet cut any of our finds. We hope to spend a week there in the spring, if it is not closed by the @#%^$##$ politicians. Woody

Amazing patterns in that stuff. Shame it will be closed to collectors. By the time I get out west again the only thing left open to collecting will be sandstone. lol

Don't get too worried about the Cady areas. Although they're trying to shut us out of a LOT of areas in Southern Cali, I highly doubt that The Cady's will be affected. The BLM's info always indicates the main usage of this area is rockhounding, along with indications that it's not a particularly unique enough area in any other ways to make it a candidate for wilderness classification.
What pisses me off is that all of this green pressure comes from yuppies in LA who've undoubtedly never rockhounded or even camped in a damn tent. They just want pretty scenery as they drive down the highway in their hybrid SUVs.
The more that I think about it, the more I'm inclined to write a formal proposal / plan for Rockhound Licensing. They do it for hunting, they do it for fishing, and it's a win/win situation. People get to continue their activities for a reasonable fee, and money generated goes to help wildlife. In the case of rockhounding, the money could be used to PROPERLY close abandoned mines and to clean-up closed rockhounding areas which were left a mess. Hunters and fishermen don't mind paying the fees because they know it goes towards "their general cause". Would you mind paying a reasonable fee if it kept more areas open and the money went toward "your general cause"? Before you answer, go to YouTube and have a look at some of the idiots who go into abandoned mines. Some of them even bring their little kids in with them! There is absolutely NO good reason NOT to permanently seal 99 percent of abandoned mines and remove the debris that's been left behind.
On a similar note ... you should see all of the "ooops we strayed outside of our boundaries" crap that is littering the desert around Fort Irwin and China Lake! The remains of a big rocket are scattered in a little canyon just a few hundred yards from where I collected Selenite the other day! I saw lots of their other garbage out there, too! All of this big "green speak" from the BLM when it comes to the public using the wilderness, yet another branch of the government (the military) is totally abusing and destroying over a million acres, PLUS the desert AROUND their facilities! To quote the stereotyped Native American, "White man government speak with forked tongue" ... not disrespect (far from it), just very applicable to the same age-old history and continued flagrant two-faced misconduct of our government.

Michael: I have heard Feinstein wants to close the Cadys but maybe it's just a rumor. I agree with you about the mines as that's a giant problem in many areas. Up by our ranch it was very dangerous to walk through dense brush as deep pits were all over. I'm a bat fancier though and hate to see the pits and tunnels filled as they are such important habitat. Putting a grill work over entrances is better. That's been done with caves and mine tunnels a lot and works pretty well. Licensing is a good idea. Government seldom shuts off any source of revenue and having a vested interest in keeping a revenue stream flowing would probably guarantee a lot of collecting areas would stay open while mitigating wildlife habitat damage at the same time. Cool idea!....Mel
