Nope, Janos Agate is named for the Mexican town of Janos but is actually from NW of Cerro El Tascate, Mexico. Another name for the material is Rainbow Agate. A real pretty material but Brad Cross says it's usually cobbed down and trimmed before sale because of excess matrix...Mel

Mary Ann: Your material is about average for todays markets. The best examples have real nice broad banding in reds, blues and yellows. I met the miner once at Quartzite probably 30 years ago and the raw nodules were huge with just a tiny bit of agate in the center maybe one half to one inch wide. he wanted about $1 per pound but the nodules were so heavy with matrix that you'd be paying like $20 per pound for the agate you were buying. As I said, the most commonly seen Janos now days has had lots of the matrix trimmed off with a hammer and is not nearly as nice as the older material....Mel

I did look at them Mary Ann but afraid I couldn't help out. Similar materials come from so many areas and none seemed to me to fit a particular location. Other than saying some are fortification agate, mossy agate or breccia, there was not much i could come up with other than guesses...Mel
