I built a foam box out of 3/4" foam insulation today that fits over top of my big tumbler (it holds about 2gal). Usually I only use it outside because the 4" PVC barrel is really loud, but I had just bought a couple of plumbers plugs though that I had been itching to try out as end caps on the PVC pipe. Anyhow the foam box works really well, it brings the noise down from the equivalent of a road being graded to about the same as my dual 3lb. Its just a foam box that covers the barrel but leaves the motor exposed held together with wood skewers so I won't show a pic, but for anyone who has a similar tumbler give this a try. It makes a huge difference on noise. Acoustic roof tiles would probably be better yet but I had the foam on hand.

When I made my barrels out of 4" ABS, I used a glue on cover for the bottom and a temp clean out plug(the type with the wing nut) for the lids. I also lined the inside of my barrels with 1/8" rubber which solved 2 problems. One, it cut the noise way down, and second, it cushioned the rocks so they wouldn't get so beat up.

I cut the rubber liner so it was a tight fit inside the barrel, then just used some ABS cement around the bottom and top edges and down the seam. The barrels held up really nice. The weak part of the barrel is the bottom cover, I wound up having to replace those every 6-8 months. But that was no big deal because I would just cut the whole bottom of the barrel and glue a new cap on to it, leaving me with a shorter barrel. I'll see if I still have pics.

Thanks stoner, might have to try that. I'm currently using 2 plumbers plugs to seal my ends. I had threaded on caps but they were bad for getting grit caught in them and sticking. wolfden I not sure if you wanted pics of mine or stoner's but here is mine with and without the foam box. In the uncovered shot I have CE tumbler barrels on it with the PVC below in the pic.

good pic of your tmbler. I just need to get shafts and I can redo my tumbler. I even found a 1/8 hp motor for it.

Hey Sas, your tumbler looks a lot like mine!!! Good job. I started out using the threaded caps too, but had the same problem with the grit and the caps leaking. One more thing you might want to do is to use some rubber tubing to cover your rollers. Eventually your barrel will start to slip on the rollers without the tubing. Oh, and if you can find a smaller motor, like the ones used on commercial tumblers, you'll use less electricity.

The rollers are kind of grippy actually. They slipped at first so I put tape on them which wore off but it left enough "stuff" that they don't slip. You might be suprised on the electricity use though, a bigger moter will use a bit more power than a small one but the amp draw is very load dependent (low load = low draw). The biggest problem with a low load on a bigger motor is that it will get a bit warm (which accounts for most of the bit higher amp draw).

You know, the box looks a lot like preformed AC ducting. It is insuklated and actually made to deaden sound. mark H.
