Well, I made my first real big blunder since I took up rock tumbling again. I was recharging grit in one of my 3 lb barrels about a week ago and somehow I forgot to add water. Today I went out to check on my rocks and when I opened up the lid, the rocks were dry and crusted with a gray/brown skin. Confused, I thought the water had leaked out of the barrel or something. I don't know how the hell I would of overlook adding water... But anyway, interestingly enough, the rock did actually grid down quite a bit. Not as much as with water, but still not bad at all. I wouldn't recommend a dry tumbler though. The grit/rock dust creates a thick crust inside the barrel and is hard to clean up. Don't forget to add the water.

Greetings All, I've come very close to doing this a couple of times, even getting so far as to tighten the screw on the lid. But I usually shake the barrel a few times before start it rolling, so I heard that it wasn't sloshing as it should be. Sure enough, take off the lid, no water. It happens WilliamC

But seriously, on my first batch I added water...oh yes I did...but grit? well...that would be a no. I've also been known to make coffee without putting the pot under the drip. I don't like to think of such forgetfulness as old age, rather that I am just too much of a "big picture" person. Stones probably grind much faster without water than without grit, though.

The mess breaks free with a regular cycle WITH water. I am suprised you didn't notice the noise difference.
