I thought I would share my work rocks. At my last birthday, a coworker/friends daughter made me a "rock" for my birthday. They themed my birthday so I also got a pet rock and rock soup, the movie rocky... Anyway, I keep that special "Fran Rocks" on my desk and I also have another that I found in scrap at the mine I went to, close to the Mica book I found. It has little red crystal areas in it and I think it is covered in tiny mica flecks. It is really glittery naturally. I am not sure what it is and I really don't want to put it in specimens since I don't know what it is so I will share it here: Some of the red areas seem a bit soft. Will scratch with a fingernail. Any Ideas? What ever it is, I really like it and keep it on my desk. Fran

*L* Untill you said the red areas were soft, I was thinking a classic mica shist with garnets being the red spots. Lots of mica shist being metamorphic, has garnets in association. Some forms of micaceous granite also have garnets, as our kitchen counters are made of that. *S* Being that the spots are soft though ( garnets are quite hard) I'm stumped....Mel

Ahh Fran that looks nice!!! That rock in question is all shiny and sparkely, so it falls into my very calculated and researched family of SPARKLE ROCK. LOL Amber

You know, you guys are probably right. I looked at it again with a loop and used a nail file. It looks like red clay and some fractured area of garnet coming off, then, I was leaving metal pieces on the remaining garnet itself, from my nail file that I was scraping it with. It looks like all the areas are the same. I washed it when I first got it but some red clay must have really adhered to the garnet. I like it. It is staying right where it is on my desk. Fran
