Anyone know what this is? The guy that has it is calling it a lapidary machine, but I have my doubts. It might be converted into a vertical flat lap though. I'm going to call him later this morning to see what kind and how big the disk is. Curt

Just a guess, but it looks like a faceting machine. The hole patterns kind of match a template I seen on the Internet for hand faceting. Ask him if there is a type of holder that goes with it.

Agreed, looks like it's for truing up edges @ different angles.
There should be several guides.
How much?

It's got an 8 inch disk. Nothing else is with it.
$150, and I have to drive 100 miles to get it.
It would be great to play with, but I'm not sure if it's worth that to me.

I'm going to call him later this morning to see what kind and how big the disk is. Curt It is a grinder used by dentists to grind molds they take of peoples teeth. Actually to grind the excess off so they fit the mold in something or other to cure. How do I know? The dentist my ex-gf worked for gave me one. I haven't tried to use it for anything yet. Offer him less if you really want it. It's not really for lapidary (and that's what I'd tell whoever) and the grinding wheel itself is very aggressive and does not appear to be that useful for lapidary. it appears more to be for removing softer material fast.

Thanks Chad! Have you looked at it closely? Could it be converted to lapidary easily?

It's got a place to hook up water on the back Jim. I think I'll offer him $50 for it and see if he bites. Curt

LOL - and if he bites, does that mean he was or was not a dentist?
It looks like it could be used horizontal quite easily, that it might in fact be meant for horizontal. I'd guess it could go either way for a nice flat lap with an exchange of discs.

I thought the disc that comes with it looks like a Silicon Carbide type disc. I was going to research and see what other discs might be had for it. Haven't gotten around to it. The disc on mine is very aggressive. At least 80 maybe 60 grit and has almost like swirl patterns in it's face. If he doesn't bite, I might sell you mine for 50 + shipping. It needs a new gaskit that could be made easily from gaskit stock or even better gaskit compound from the auto parts store. I took the aluminum housing apart to clean it because the adjustable table was stuck. I think they set it and never move it. I jsut haven't had time for it.

Thanks for posting this! The machine as given me ideas I hadn't thought of. Presently I'm trying to perfect a method to grind a flat staight line on 2 rocks for gluing together purpose. A veridical flat lap with a tool rest would be a big improvement over my present method. A dental machine? Must be! Teeth grinding equiptment is cool.
