I was organizing my pics and decided to post these. Those of us enjoying (?) yucky winter weather may appreciate being reminded of hot summer days when we were dying to get cooled off! Shortly after I moved here, we had moles all through our yard. But then... a pair of Cooper's Hawks moved in and... no more moles! LOL. We had been trying EVERYTHING to get rid of them... chewing gum, flooding their tunnels, a moletov cocktail... and nature just took care of it the next year. (rambling here) Anyway, here are my backyard buddies: They've stuck around for about 6 years and had many babies in our back woods. Well, last summer when we suffered weeks of no rain and a heat index in the triple digits, I ran the sprinkler on my garden which is next to the driveway. Well, I soon looked out the front window and saw one in the driveway checking out the puddle that was forming and getting a drink. Then he/she laid down in it! And began to preen... It kinda looked like we had a duck on our driveway! Word spread fast! Here's a 2 1/2 min video: video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1704358983436060650&hl=en (sorry about the bumpy camera) Enjoy! Jo

Aren't they majestic? I love the photos, Jo!
Put me in a cabin in the woods with a few provisions and snow me in! ANYTHING but a Louisiana July and August,,,like being on the sun with 100% humidity. Makes one feel like you're in Dali's The Persistence of Memory.

Chewing gum? What does that do? We had moles too........until an owl took up residence in our swamp. Then she had babies. I loved hearing all of the hooting every night.

LOL. Using Juicy Fruit Gum is a myth that is said to gum-up their intestines or drive them away. Believe me, it doesn't work. Neither does human or dog hair.

They're gorgeous! I love watching the hawks around here, but I can't say as I've had one take a bath in my driveway!

Using Juicy Fruit Gum is a myth that is said to gum-up their intestines or drive them away. Well, at least the moles had juicy fruit fresh breath for awhile LOL. I knew about the dog hair but had never heard of gum. You could just do what my friend's grandpa did. He was retired and would sit in his chair on the porch all day with beer and a shotgun just waitin for those suckers to pop their heads up. LOL Thanks for sharing the photos. Shannon

That is so cool that you got the hawk on tape. I love watching them glide on the wind currents except when faster birds are dive bombing them.

I love raptors and spend way too much time rubberneckin' to see them as I drive. One of these days I'll end up off the road because I was watching a hawk instead of the lines. lol

LOL. I remember one summer day when a hawk landed on the railing of our back deck and just sat there, watching something. When I looked, I saw our little 6 lb cat sunbathing on the deck! I quickly brought little kitty inside. Jo

Looks like you have pretty neat boarders there and they enjoyed their water treat! I tried the gum thing before...never noticed any difference in the gopher population and felt guilty because it seemed like a bad death blocking them up so they couldn't go and then they die. Just gave up on getting rid of them and then they moved on. Fran
