Hi fellow rockers!!! I'm a newbee to this site & to rockhounding...have become totally addicted in no time flat. I live on Vancouver Island so have an amazing choice of rocks/stones to collect. So far I've just been picking up anything that looks nice when it's wet...ha ha ... now have hundreds of pounds of the stuff. How do I go about identifying them??? Does anyone have any before and after pictures of polished stones that may help me in identifying my stash?
This is a great site!

Welcome! Don't know if I can be much help though. I also have access to a great quanity of rocks and I have tried for months to find some way to identify them. I have accumualted a lot of pictures of minerals and rocks both rough and polished. Problem is, I seem to have an awful lot of rocks that don't look like any of them! What I have been trying to do is sort by hardness and some basic structure like crystal type or lack of, such as in the Chalcedondy rocks. It does help some if you can get some information of local geology. It may give some clues as to what types of rocks and minerals are typically found in different places. I'm going to try and do some before and after pictures of rocks that I have found. I'll post some if that look interesting. Also keep reading here, these guys have some awsome knowledge!
