Hello all -- just wanted to say hello from AZ and thanks for all the info to help get me started. I just got my Lortone 33B yesterday and started with the rough stones the included in the kit. I figured that would at least get my feet wet. I am really looking forward to hounding even more. It sounds like there is great opportunity to find a lot of my own material just around here in AZ. Now I just gotta figure out all these terms and techniques (like I said I am brand, brand new). This board really does help tremendously.
Thanks and btw does anyone know how to give me some patience?
Thanks again, Kevin

Kevin, Welcome to the board. I have a bucket of patience you can have, just pay the shipping. It should be a real light package and when you open it you might have trouble getting your hands around the contents, but just be patient. Its in there! Bob

Hi Kevin, Welcome to the board! The patients part...that is the hardest thing to acquire in this hobby! It takes time, lots of time to learn to have the patients needed. in the meantime, you check often. Just don't rush the first step. It takes the longest. Fran

Kev, where are you at in Arizona? There are a LOT of folks here from Arizona, and they'd probably be happy to tell you a spot or two where you can collect your own rocks. Actually, it would be in your best interests to put your city or town in your profile. Unless you bought your tumbler from someone REALLY nice, chances are that the freebies included with your tumbler probably aren't worth the time and effort to tumble.

Michael -- Thanks for the response. I am in Phoenix. I do imagine the starter rocks are not going to be great, but I wanted to get going and I hadn't found this forum yet. Any suggestions on where to get some good rough rocks? I look forward to making some connections to those around here and picking their brains. Thanks again for the response.
Kevin

I took your suggestion, Michael, and put my location on my account. I didn't realize it wasn't on there before. Like I said I look forward to learning all about this really cool hobby.

Hehehe ... DUDE ... Phoenix ... you are in the midst of The Rock Gods of this forum LOL.
You could probably just drive away from town, take a turn on any dirt road toward a hill or mountain, and find something good. The area is THAT good.
OR ... you're only like 100 miles from Burro Creek. Drive your truck up there and pick up a few hundred pounds of agate.
OR ... start a new thread in the Location Location Location forum entitled "Phoenix, Arizona" and be prepare to be bombarded. Hehehe.
Living in Phoenix and tumbling the stuff you got with your tumbler ... tsk tsk ... LMAO

Let's call it a trial run. (He says with his tail between his legs :-) ) I'll chalk it up to inexperience. I'll look for some good stuff this week and load up the other drum (or should I just toss the first one and start over?). I will look up this Burro Creek of which you speak. Thanks for the info.

Burro Creek is about 100 miles up the 93 from the center of Phoenix. You can be there in an hour ... oh ... no ... that's if I were driving ... about an hour and a half. ;D
If you start that Phoenix thread in the Location section, I'm sure you'll get some definate locations to go hounding near you. Better than just driving off into the desert. Go out and collect at a few locations that people give in that thread, then decide whether you want to keep tumbling what you got with the tumbler.

Welcome!
One of the nice things about the starter rocks is they are generally good, easy tumbling rocks. Yes, self-collected is nice, but self-collected doesn't necessarily mean easy to tumble. My first self-collected batch disappeared in my tumbler the second week. That's what I get for tumbling sandstone! (Even if it was pretty, LOL!)

Hi Kevin, welcome aboard. You'll learn a lot and see some beautiful rocks here. And, being rom AZ, you'll find tons of great rocks to toss in that tumbler. You really don't want to start another batch of rocks in your other barrel. The reason being that you need to have a separate barrel for polishing. You don't want to use the same barrel for polish that you use with the other grits. You don't want any cross contamination. If you stack you grit to store it, put the 60/90 on the bottom, then the 120, then the 500 and the polish on top. That way, if it spills or something, you won't end up with coarse grit in your polish. You sure don't want that! :nono: And, you'll learn patience if you're going to tumble rocks! Sometimes it takes three or four weeks to get the rough rocks shaped and smooth. You will be seriously hooked in no time! llana

Thanks Beef! I would like to do a rock trip in the near future. I am in the West Valley. 99th ave and lower buckeye. I'll get some pics up when I get the rough out of the tumbler. I just ordered two more barrels today for stages 3 and 4. I took llana's suggestion for a different barrel for each stage. Thanks for the reply.
