Set 4 This is my 4th batch to come out of the polish. I think I am going to put them back in for 5 more days and then burnish. These are not as purity as the agate, opal, and pet wood I have been drooling over on RPH, but they all come from within a mile of the house. So I cannot complain too much. Plus I need to practice the photo—thing. Now I need to learn how to cab. My wife is definitely a rock widow. Is it usual when they come out of polish that the stones are slick? It seems they plastic is on them in small threads. I am using AO polish now.

Great tumble - found rock is the best! You are very luck to have such nice material close to your house. It looks like you shaped them very well and got them very smooth. I'll be curious to see them after another round of polish and a burnish (which may get rid of the film you noticed). Great job and keep us informed!

Hopefully, all you need is another polish and burnish to get the shine you want. You may want to make the slurry thicker or use a lot of pellets to keep them from going backwards instead of progressing (that happened with one of my batches when I put it back in polish). You have found a terrific batch of stones and I really like the little black one on the top left although there are a lot of them I like here! I think you have done a great job! Fran

This is some great local stuff! Some great colors and patterns. I'd listen to Fran, she knows what she's talking about. Jo

Well thanks, but after viewing the items at Fredericksburg today I can truthfully say that what I posted is pretty 'Green' stuff.
All of you are being way too nice. That stuff is totally amateur.
But hey I will get better. (I can't get any worse--only one way to go and that is up).

Hi Fiftiesrock, A very nice batch of rocks , you should have seen my first batches in fact I actualy gave up for 18 months then I found RTH and James had a article on polishing to a gloss finish
I love the bright reds of Pic's 3 & 4
You dont say your method or time of stones in the grits, ?
You cant make a purse out of a pigs ear is a saying over here. rocks need time go back 2 stages if your not happy with the results
Try a different polish , I polish with CO
Each stage needs to be compleate (10 or 14 days ) use a 4 stage recepie like the RTH home page recepie, and wash between cycles and be [glow=red,2,300]CLINICALY[/glow] [glow=red,2,300]clean[/glow] cant be over stressed.
And I do a 24 hour wash and burnish in Borax and soaf flakes (Ivory) after the last grit stage (600) before polishing
All that takes about 2 months so I have to add --- be paitent !!
You certainly have some great rocks to polish in your area ,
Be critical and sort out the broken & sharps in the last 2 stages
Oh and you know all that small near sand stuff (small stones) put some of that in the barrel also it grinds down , carries the grit, & makes a good goop quicker assisting the "grind"
Keep at it !! OH another thing !! dont forget to log down all your runs and results so you can work out what went well and what didnt ,and make up your own recepie
Have fun and dont forget to show us the results , Please !!

Very nice rocks. All very well rounded and shaped. The shine is definately there. I wish I could find stuff like that within a mile from home.
Quick Question
Does the rock (second from right, third row down) have a small hole in it?
If it does have a small hole in it. Personally, I would not have put it into the polish stage, just in case there is a risk of contamination from previous grits. Even the slightest contamination can prevent a full polish - In my experiance and opinion.
