Howdy folks, Well, another bright and beautiful south Texas day here. Got back from shopping and thought...chores? Nah! So instead, I decided to go up the hill and search for more of those cycads. Found most are buried in the soil so you have to watch for little bits of the diamond pattern which might be showing above ground, then dig them out. Found a few all from the same small area of the hilltop and they all look to be pieces of outer bark or maybe broken off buds. Again, fairly dull colored but well agatized and the diamond leaf scar patterns range in size from about 1/4 inch to almost an inch. Anyway, scrubbed the dirt off them a chipped a couple to make sure that's what they were. Here are a few pics. Thanks for looking....mel The pile: Closer shot showing the diamond exterior bark patterns: One of the largest pieces chipped to show interior:

*sniff* I'd like to see some slabs too but had to give away the old clunker slab saw before I moved to Texas ( Too heavy and dirty to move). I've still got the 10 inch saw but it needs some work before I'll have it up and running again. May be quite some time before I get me a new slab saw with the way our countries finances are screwed up lately....Mel

Hope to see one slabbed soon. Maybe someone can slab some for you Mel.

Tigger: Yep, talking with Curt about cutting some for me. Cycads were primitive plants ( the first flowering plants) during the Jurassic and Cretaceous period. Some exist even today in the tropics ( Sago Palm). They are pineapple-like in shape with external armor comprised of old leaf attachments which look like the scales on a pinecone. The fossils are apparently identified by those external diamond shaped formations which are the old leaf scars....Mel

Mel, we have lots of Sago Palms around here, though I'm not sure if they are native. Do you think some of those can be found around Fl anywhere?
