Has anyone here ever made one? if so, what gauge wire did you find to work best? I have a few smaller cabs I am dreaming big here and thinking I might could - so any pointers ? tips? right now I am looking at Sterling silver HH square 24 gauge and 22 gauge HH half round. would that be workable ya think ?

That style of ring requires a stone with a hole in it, I believe. Let me see if I can find the video tutorial for the style that doesn't require a hole...

This is a video tutorial for a cabbed ring that I had put in my favorites. I have done 2 so far with sterling silver. I would suggest that you use practice wire for your first couple as my firsts two came out only ok but with practice, these rings are beautiful. www.dawnandevan.com/cabochan_wire_wrap_tutorial.htmI made the rings as I was watching the tut and it was not that hard, but I had to keep pausing the tut a lot to catch up. I'll see if I can find the rings and will post a pic.

I made one for my dad last year I think - it's Honkin' HUGE - Hawk eye & sterling silver wire I got the pattern out of Wire Artist Jeweller (the magazine is no longer in print but you could still find some I think)

I made several with the vid in Lori's link. It was early on in my wrapping experience and I messed them up real good. I guess I ruined 3 or 4 and have 2 or 3 that I finished. I'm not a particularly proud guy, but I don't wear any of them Be prepared for a steep learing curve if you are new to wrapping. If I had made one that even came close to Tweet's I'd be dancing T

After seeing Tweetie's, which is just perfectly beautiful, I'm real glad I haven't found my rings yet. Heck, maybe I'll post them anyway so kentuckyrocker has a comparrison between beginner and practised professional

That is one gorgeous ring - wow. Thanks so much all of you for the tutorial and the leads here. I did find a site where you can order back issues of Wire Artist - www.theamulet.ca/2004_issues.htmland there is an issue that has pronged as well. I am getting the gypsy ring for sure because it is definitely what I had in mind. Thanks so much. Yeah I got cheap wire and I have leaverite to practice on first lol! The first big crafts show comes in October so I should be able to get it right by then I would hope. Please post pics - I will -even my first goofy ones. It is so wonderful to see progress - it gives me hope that I can progress as well lol!

The one I made was my first attempt and it is very similar to the tutorial that sitnwrap - I like the one in the video much better - the one I posted reminded me of something that a gangster would wear - it's super large - I asked to see it the other day and he had it locked up - I told him to wear the darn thing!
Sitnwrap: I'm no practiced professional, I just had really good instructions and the right tools - If I were to make one for myself, I would make one where the stone was much smaller
I'd be interested in seeing others

ha, we were posting at the same time Tweety. Actually, imho, I think this style ring looks/shows best in GF. I've looked at a ton of them and for some reason the GF looks a lot neater even when made by professionals. Just my :2cents:

Here's a pic of a ring I made for my Mom. I cut and polished the opal then followed a video to create the ring. This was like the 2nd thing I ever wrapped and as you can see, it looks very rough, LOL. I have since re-wrapped it and It came out great. One hint, Dead soft wire!! As you work it, it will become harder and it will hold up just fine. After you learn how to do it, you can switch to half hard wire if it makes you feel better using harder wire. Anyway, here's the pic: Also, the wire used in this photo was to thin. I don't remember what I used, but as you can see, the wire seems to be frilly. Larger guage wire is bolder, and it makes the detail smoother looking. Good luck to anyone who chooses to make a ring. It's not as hard as it looks, just watch the video and take your time. As stated earlier, practice with junk wire first. Once you get the idea down on the steps, go for It!! Tigger

Okay, I'll share... Here's my attempt at the ring in the video, only trying to adapt it to a prong style instead: The stone was too small, though, and kept falling out. As I was reworking the ring, one of the wires broke, so I switched to a bead and tried this: I didn't really care for the way it turned out though, so I revamped a little and settled on this: From the side: And that was my last attempt at a ring!

wow. all of those are really beautiful - I know you said that wire was too thin on the first one I saw but to me, it is classy and delicate. Just really nice. I love how you adapted the style Akansan. I sincerely hope that is not your last. Really beautiful. Now what size wire did you use? I see it is square with round? or is that half round detailing? Really nice size- I like that thinner wire one too. Now here I sit with a load of laundry and dishes and supper to make yet what is on my mind? grabbing my crap wire and my leaverite -pushing play on that video LOL!

I used 22 G square for the main parts, with half round for the binds on the side. When the wire broke and I had to rework, I used 26 G round for the accent wire. I wanted something smaller than the 22G, and I had a lot of 26 G from a viking knit bracelet I did. And you'll be glad you're using the crap wire and leaverite! The only reason why I even tried to salvage it in the first place was because the main part of the ring was still good and I used sterling silver. This was when silver was $20/oz, and I didn't want to waste it!
