How important is it to change paper bags each time you filter your oil? Is there a reason to change it other than fear of the bottom dropping out of the bags?
Cutting in the winter, my 14" drop saw oil needs changed about once a week. It would be easier if I could just leave the bags for a couple cleanings.

I don't change my bag until it is full of goo, then I take the bag full of goo out of the bucket and put a new bag in.

On the other hand, oil will pass out of the goop faster if the bag is less full. You can put another bucket on top of the first by making a perforated lid for it to sit on. The oil will pass around the first bag, then on to the oil bucket at the bottom. Both bags, and buckets are cheap, just stack them. Woody

I have plenty of oil right now at least, so waiting on it to filter isn't a problem. I was afraid using a saturated bag (or in my case, two) resulted in more sludge particles getting through the bag. But if that's not the case, then I'll just keep reusing the bags for a while. Granted, it'll take me a lot longer to fill up the bag with sludge than a big saw!

Two reasons not to fill the bag. Woody hit the first - it'll just take longer and longer to filter through the older sludge.
And the first time a bag full of that crap tears or splits, well, that's the second reason.

Bags are pretty cheap. Don't really see a reason not to change the bag......Bob

This is a great thread. I have just been dipping sludge out into a bucket and let the sludge settle to the bottom and then poor the good oil off the top. I might try the bags, though. I am sure I am loosing some oil with my method. Where in the world do you get the paper bags this day and age?

Some supermarkets still have paper bags, the one I go to has them under the checkout and you have to request them.I always ask for a few extra and they are usually happy to give me a few.A Chinese restaurant I order from uses them too. When I'm mooching bags at the market I sometimes slip the cashier a few polished stones, works wonders!
