Howdy folks, Well, one my neighbors recently used a giant bulldozer to clear the cedar from his lot. Really tore up the ground so I thought I'd mosey over and have a looksee to see what was uncovered. Sure enough, this lot is like 200 yards from me and he's got a bunch of the good stuff. I've probably got a million flint nodules on my hill and I seldom find a single nice orby one that looks like Polish Flint. Mine are most all solid earthtones with maybe a few fossils. That darn lot has an area on top the hill where almost every dang nodule has wonderful bands and orbs. Well anyway, I think maybe a few of those nice orby ones are gonna find there way home in my little pack from time to time *L*. Also, darned if I didn't find a piece of druzy pet wood almost like ole Curt collects. Wood is rare as hen's teeth here too. Anyway, here are a few pics. Thanks for looking......Mel My little wood piece: Orby and patterned flint. This is really nice glassy stuff and evidence of Amerind workings are all over the lot. Wonder if the lot's for sale *S*?

Nice finds Mel! Found any complete points yet? It was looking like Spring might come early here this last weekend..but we got hit with about 6" of heavy, wet, sick snow today. It's supposed to be stormy most of this week too. So...with all that said...I'm sure GLAD some of us can go Rockhounding this time of year. Gives us snowbound people something to look forward to. Mel, I just love tumbling flint! I have found several really neat pieces over this way. My brother in law's family has the gravel pit here and they dig up all sorts of neat looking flint. I don't have to go to the gravel pit though because almost everybody gets their driveway gravel from SW. I am always picking up something out of someone's driveway. They think I'm nuts! One ranch I work at has an entire petrified tree stump. Really cool! The ranch manager has given me a couple of really nice big pieces of pet and a Texas thunder egg. It's not easy to find around here, but the ranch is about 20,000 acres - a good portion of it has not been touched by human feet since the cowboy and indian days. They have found some nice arrowheads and other such when rounding up the cattle. I've thought about cutting the thunder egg to see what's inside, but it's so big and neat looking, I just can't bring myself to do it. llana

Nice finds! You're giving me Spring fever!
Will that druzy wood clean up, or is that the color of the crystals?

Steve: I've only found one almost complete point and it was in the horse trail so one of those big galoots had stepped on it and knocked out a couple of chips. Lots of partials around all over the place though.
Chuck: The wood piece is just how I found it. Probably a good soaking in oxalic acid would clean it up and remove some of the organic staining.....Mel

Mel: I believe by now some of us are think you bought that ranch knowing it was a rockhound heaven! Not only do you find some very nice material, but you seem to be able to go out every day of the year whilst the rest of us a winter bound. BTW, I am sure you already are on the watch for bulldozers in the neighborhood. Woody

Now that is some sweet flint! I guess I am going to have to get my box of flint out that I picked up when I was back home for a visit and cut some of it open...I would love to find some of those orbs! Fran

Mel, could you show the other side, or the ugly side, of the flint for me? Do you polish the whole thing, or just the cut side? Nona

Nona: As the ones with well defined orbs seem to be smaller than the monster solid colored ones on my lot, I think I can slab up these specimens for cabbing on my ten inch saw. The outsides don't look like much, just white with some rings showing on broken surfaces but I'll try and take you a pic tomorrow....mel
