I have spent the afternoon attempting to apply my prowess (quit laughing) at wire wrapping. I so suck at it!!! After two sets of 3-1 foot pieces and pinched the crap out of one of fingers .... it drew blood!!! ..... What am I doing wrong? ?? Maybe I should just stick to something else .... like .... taking a blow torch to peacock ore ...... ;D Dam ..... thank the stars I have a sense of humor or I would be really pissed!!!! Thanks again to all ..... as always Julie ...

Something I teach my beginners is to tape the wire. Lay the wires next to each other, then tape them in three or four places - both ends, and then somewhere in the middle near where the binds will be. As you add a binding wrap, remove the tap beside it. This helps keep the wires neat while you're still learning.

Ahhhhh I did put tape on it .... But ..... by the time I try to get it started .... which is a big pain in the butt .... I can't seem to get it to sit still short of taping or anchoring it with a table vise. How do I control the pull .... the amount of pressure I put on the wire to wrap it??? I seem to crimp it everytime .... it looks like garbage .... actually I had another word for it .... ;D Okay ..... breathe .... in .... out ..... in ..... out .... Oooooo ..... maybe I need another puzzle to do??

lol... It takes practice... I'm still practicing. Don't be too hard yourself and don't expect perfect results the first few times.... and definitely take Ronda's advice... I use blue painter's tape that I cut into thin strips. You can wean off of it later as you get more experience. Eventually you'll learn how to work with the wire and not against it.... just takes practice. Don't give up...

Julie, i wouldnt recommend the table vice LOL Breathe girl!! You have to be the boss. Tell the wire you are bigger than it is. But seriously, practice makes perfect. Maybe throw it across the room? That sometimes makes me feel better. I put thin strips of painters tape down the entire length of the wire bundle, about an inch or two apart. That helps hold the entire thing steady while you are doing the bindings. Shannon

Are the wires twisting in the tape still? Or is it something else that's escaping? The reason I ask is because I started using these guys: www.hobbytool.com/miniclamp.aspxI'd clamp one on the end and one in the middle (NOT near the bind). Then I'd just move the clamp around as needed. As I got used to handling the wire, the clamps actually would just get in the way. But the wire stayed in place long enough for me to get the binds in place! I still have my two, and I'd be glad to send them your way if you're interested.

Hi Julie
I Use the above clamps they make a big difference
A few tips/ ideas,
I start with a right angle bend (on the wrapping wire ) in this clamp (which is clamped around the "frame" wires)with the wrapping wire going clockwise,
Can I sujest to you that you use some real thin wire to practice with, round the thick "frame wires" this will give you the "feel" of the bending and help you lay it in close to the last round
It might be your wire is to big a gauge and Pushes the "frame" wires aside instead of bending round them ?
Keeping the "frame" in place is one of the most important things, weather you use a clamp or tape ,
What type of "frame " wire are you using ? square or round ? this also makes a big difference (square dosent "roll" as much as round )
Also no 1/2 or 3/4 end bits in the bail these just create problems and uncitely bumps
I think Utube has some tutorials on wire wrapping have you looked at them ?
Keep at it you will get there ,we have all experianced your problems
Hope this is of help 4 U ?

Okay .... I'm okay now .... ;D
Funny .... I bought 6 little plastic clamps yesterday from Harbor Freight ...
As for the tape ... the only thing I have right now ... is brown masking. I do not think the kind of tape matters. Or not.
Then I had an idea ... maybe use 4 strands instead of 3. That way it cannot crimp as it will be in a box formation. Hmmmm ... I will try that. Then again, if it is in a box formation, when it comes to crimping the wire flat, it won't work ... or not.
Me thinks me think too much ;D

Throwing things, kicking things, screaming, cussin'...all helps. But in the end, you just have to to do 'em to work through it. After you have ruined a bunch a light will come on one day and it will be better. But the light will never come on if you give up. So... you can say your giving up, pretend to give up, actually give up...several times... but you'll never see the light if you don't get back to wrapping and screwing it up, wrapping and screwing it up There is no short cut....your pathway to happiness is through the pit of pain and dispair, lol. Don't feel bad Julie. My wire wrapped sucks big time. I did one that I was happy with, but it's been down hill since. A have a little ball of ruined wire and at the rate I'm going, it will be several feet in diameter in no time. ;D
I put the wire wrapping aside and am almost finished with another rock project. When I finish it, I'll give the wire another shot.

Are you still trying, Julie? I hope so, I need someone to scream and cry with. I am just starting to attempt this wrapping . So far I've cut 6 - 8 inch wires! Alrighty. Now I'm trying to straighten the things. I have 'um taped and they look straight but I know if I take that tape off they are gonna spring all over the place! ;D To be continued . . .

Oh my goodness! I just had this picture in my mind about a ball of wire.
Have you ever heard of the largest ball of string?
Well .... I think I'm gonna go for the Guiness record of the largest wire ball.
HA! Me give up!! Not!
llana2go .... thank you for that visual!
