Howdy folks, Went out hunting artifacts this afternoon. Despite the fact I found a pretty big camping and knapping area, I didn't have a lot of luck , mainly just flakes and a few broken point sections, scrapers etc but I did find a huge blank that apparently was discarded before it had been pressure flaked into a finished tool. It started as a big solid flat flint nodule and you can see where the percussion flaking was started. Harley ( agatemaggot) advised me to always pick these good blanks up to use as practice material when I try to teach myself to work flint. This one is so nice and solid I may save it till I become real proficient because it's well banded and would make a swell large knife. Thanks for looking...Mel

It looks like that ol boy just got a good start on that one and his wife called him in for lunch ! That piece appears to have some great banding like you say and will make a great lookin piece. If you could, will you show a pic. of the top side so we could see how he / she was setting up the striking platforms ?

I was thinking it looked like a start of a core, the top end has a bit of flaking (smaller ) like they were getting ready to do something important up there ! Looking close you can see the area like there may have been a flaw and he crushed the platform he had set up on the corner top right.

That is cool Mel! I really had no idea about arrowheads and the camps that were used until I moved to Oregon. I worked with a guy that would go out and hunt arrowheads and I was invited a couple of times to go out. I was hooked the 1st time out. That is a neat piece you found. Steve

I know what you mean about getting ( HOOKED ). I think those guys that made the dad gummed things must have dusted them with Opium or something. All you gotta do is find (ONE ), pick it up and fondle the damn thing and you just can't get it out of your system ! I was talking with Mel this weekend and he mentioned that there are 4 or 5 pay dig sites within a 2 hour drive from his new place there in Texas.
I told him--------- STAY_____AWAY_____DON'T DO IT !
JUST SAY NO !

It looks like it might be a core, as well. It's hard to tell in 2-D. Is it really thick?

Yeah, Harley and I pretty much decided it's a core too. It was a relatively thin nodule ( maybe an inch or so thick) but lots of big flakes have been knocked off the bottom side. I think it'll be good piece for me to try to knapp into a big knife though.....Mel
