If it scratches with a knife it is likely serpentine.

The tip of a stake knife marks it, like an aluminum marking tool, but doesn't bite into the rock at all.

If a knife leaves a trace but doesn't scratch it is harder than serpentine. If you have a loupe check it under magnification. If you see micro-crystals it is in the quartz family (agate or jasper). If it is fibrous looking it could be jade. Jade forms where serpentine contacts granite under pressure (or so I've been told). On our CA beaches jade and serpentine look very similar when wet. The serpentine will break easily when hammer struck and scratches easily with a knife. The serpentine is also attracted to my buckets as that is mostly what I come home with.

There is a trace of what looks like granite in one part of the rock, another part looks like a moss agate, and yet another part has lot of black(maybe tourmoline). I'll post pics tonight. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I just saw an ebay item that was being sold as epidote, and it looks alot like my rock. With a hardness of 6, it does match my rock better. Do you think it could be epidote?
