You have probably noticed that I post very few cabochon Photographs. Well, my camera is supposed to do macros, but it does not, never has. I contacted the maker, (Olympus), and finally received word back about fixing this wee problem. I was thinking this would happen via computer link, but oh no, I have to send the camera in to them. It is a wee bit past warranty, the the repair charge will be only slighty less than a new camera. I replied to them explaining that I would just buy a new camera, but NOT one of theirs. Is it not great that we live in world where it is less expensive to replace rather than repair? Woody

Yup, it's a throw-away world. I have electric motors made of cast iron that are still running. Somewhere along the line the manufacturers figured out if you make something that lasts, people don't need to buy as many.

Yup, I took my Coolpix in for repair and the cost was about what I coulda got a whole new camera for ( of better quality too). I had it fixed though because I am used to it's peculiarities and it's easy to use.....Mel

Some of this is the throw-away worls, and some is that gadgets have gotten so cheap. If you had a $4000 Nicon F2 about 20 years ago, it was always worth a few hundred to fix it. When the camera is less than $300, but the hourly wage of a skilled tech has only gone up, the result is throw-away.
BTW. I never did think much of Olympus macro.

I have never really thought much of Olympus in general, but the wee thing fits in the pocket, it is shock proof, and waterproof to ten feet. Great for a field trip camera....now if I would just remember to pull it out of the pocket, and take some field trip photographs, LOL. Woody

I have a lens that I have to get repaired I'm not looking forward to taking it in. May just be simpler to buy a new one. Would definitely be cheaper.

Somewhere along the line the manufacturers figured out if you make something that lasts, people don't need to buy as many. Curt There is an actual term coined for this, "Product Obsolescence", if I recall my marketing lessons correctly it was created in the 1970s.

Close Dean; I believe it is "planned obsolescence".
I find it very frustrating and a waste of resources. Here's another term that isn't used much any more: "durable goods".
