This Saturday I am taking a field trip with the Conejo Gem & Mineral Club. This is one of three clubs that are in my county. The day trip is to Gem Hill in Rosamond, California and ... well ... I am including the two maps (very cool maps) that I have been sent showing where it is and what is found where within the dig areas. I am so excited I can't stand it. My first rock flirt with dirt!!!! Funny .... little over ten years ago I used to dirt (mountain bikes) ride in remote areas like this. Now I'm gonna be crawling around playing in the dirt ;D And .... can I post pictures if I find anything?

Very cool map. My first trip there was like 30 years ago and we found some pretty nice green red and brown agate, palm root, black agate etc. It takes a really nice polish too....Mel

Julie: Thank you for posting these maps! My wife, and I went to Gem Hill last Thanksgiving using the Gem Trails book as a guide. That book puts you near, but not close, like on the wrong side of the hill! We did find some material, but not a whole lot. I did drag back a few pieces of the rainbow rhyolite, and it does polish up very nice. I have printed out, and put the maps in the Gem Trails book for next time through that area. Like Frane said, it is a great feeling to find a dirty old rock, drag it home, and bring forth its true beauty! The hard thing to learn is looking at that dirty old rock in the field, and see the beauty that lies inside waiting for a lapidary to make it shine. Woody
