Deeptime ... you made me think of something I had not thought of ...
I have had this little rock outside of my back door for over 10 years. It never occurred to me that it could be somethng versus nothing.
I am inclined to think nothing ...
What does everyone else think? It is 11" x 7" x 7" and the indentations could be man made ... I do not know.
As always Julie

Hmmmm, looks to me a bit like sandstone? I'd guess either a concretion or a natually tumbled sandstone boulder. And I'm guessing again that the indentations are natural from water/wind weathering. There are many rocks on the beaches in central California showing similar wear.

Looks well water worn, the round cavities may have been caused by another smaller stone being trapped in place by another rock or two and it was spun in place by the water current. This sounds strange as all H--- but it does happen quite frequently. The small stone being spun digs a round hole , just like the ones pictured in your post, and the smaller stone is worn down into an almost perfect sphere ! I haven't found one of these with the smaller stone still in the pocket , but I have found several similar to the one you have. I don't know what these things are called but I betcha Mel has the info on the crazy things somewhere in his files ! I said it sounds strange, a rock turning itself into a marble all by itself and if you WANTED a marble you would have to spend several hundred dollars for a machine and then spend 40 hours of your time making it !

Harley, good description! I couldn't come up with the words to describe what was in my head and you did a good job.
