Last weekend I went to a Search and Rescue Convention in Salmon Idaho. A friend and I went a couple of days early and took our sleds so we could catch the tail end of the snow season. We stayed at a friend's house in Salmon and went out 3 days in a row.
Looking at the mountains from the driveway the first day while we were waiting for the truck to warm up.
Unloading and getting ready to head up higher, the snow is pretty scarce down low.
An old gold mine stamp mill that is up one of the canyons
The bunk house for the gold mine
First day we had a dead soldier, had to tow it back out. Good thing we brought a spare sled.
2nd day up on one of the ridges
check out the view!!
The far ridge is the beginning of the Frank Church Wilderness area.
That is the NO NO area.
We stopped to check out one of the largest gold mines in Idaho, the pile behind the trees is one of the tailings piles, it is several miles long and hundreds if not thousands of feet deep. It is in the process of being reclamated now.
The pond below is the waste water treatment plant, where they clean the water after they use it to extract the gold. This thing is huge!! The roof of the building you can see poking out of the trees is the warehouse/maintenance shop where they work on the big tonka trucks that hauled ore. We really wanted to get down in closer, but the whole area is fenced off and you need permission to get in.
Another shot of one of the tailings
I got some pictures the first 2 days, but for some reason I never got a picture of the last day. The last day we rode with about 25 other Search and Rescue people, we had a blast. I was so busy playing that I forgot to stop and take a picture on the last day. It was fun, but I was getting pretty sore by the end of the third day.
I thought I had taken more pictures than this, but I guess not.
Thanks for lookin..................Tony
