Sometimes, it is easy like the photograph shows. Usually, however, it is buried in the super glue clay from the weathered material it forms in. The creek where this photograph was taken is in a wooded gully so is quite dark......except for the carnelian there. Woody The creek bottom.

Steve: This shot of the creek is just the way we found it. I had picked the larger one up, and put it back, but the others I did not touch. Some of the carnelian that has been exposed for years will have juhnk growing on it that darkens it but the more recently exposed stuff is what you see in the photograph. With the sun hitting that patch, the carnelian looks like jewels! The sun does not get in to the creek in too many places there so this was a special view. A lot of carnelian in this creek is all crystal inside, so does not make good cutters so we leave it behind. It is a long walk it to the creek, and back, so you just have to leave some behind. Amber: God already made it pretty....you made it beautiful! Woody

So, how big are those chunks? I like to place a rock hammer or hat near something like that for size reference when I take a photo out in the field.

hello, not sure if woody visits the threads anymore. If you are speaking of Woodyrock, he hasn't posted anything since January 2015, hasn't logged in since Jan 2016.
