Is there a difference between a weed and a flower? Most weeds do get flowers and some are quite pretty. I've seen seed pods somewhat similar to that before.

I've never seen anything remotely like that before. It's probably a weed, but I like it so much I'd keep it around.

That looks like a primitive relative of a wild Morning-glory. When the seed pods mature and dry would you send me a couple ? It would fit in rather well with the other (things) I am harboring in the front window. When I find something cool lookin while rock hunting I sometimes bring it home and pot it . Some ( things ) like your find may last for one season but, other finds may last for several years.

a friend of mine who is also a landscape architect always agreed with Blarney. if it's not growing in the right spot, it's a weed.

My neighbor growing up was studying horticulture. He had all kinds of weird plants, vines growing up the banister from the basement, UV lighting set-ups, etc. I remeber him telling me that horticulturally, everyone is correct, if you don't want it, it's a weed. Can you get a picture of the whole plant? There has to be some kind of leaf structure. You'll need that to pull an ID off a wildflower identification site. Its such a unique plant that an ID should be possible. I have a couple of contacts with professional naturalist through Scouting however California plants are most likely not their area of expertise. This is a good site: www.realtimerendering.com/flowers/flowers.html

That plant is called spoke pod ( also heard it called lens pod) genus is Thysanocarpus and it's in the mustard family. It's a weed but a decorative weed. Some folks dry them and use them in floral arrangements.....Mel

Oh, I think it is very pretty. Even if it is a weed, looks like a good one. Fran

Mel is spot on I think. www.sueycreek.org/flora.htmand weed or not, it would be most welcome in my garden with the other "weeds". Of course I prefer to call them native plants myself. That is way kewl. I like. Theresa
