First Hi from the new guy! I spent the last week or so reading old posts on the forum and generally trying to get a feel for the place while learning as much as I could from reading.
I am somewhat new to lapidary and rockhounding. I've always liked rocks, and my wife makes beaded jewelry using beads, rocks and gemstones. Money being what it is, I am in the process of building the majority of my own machines from a flat lap, to a 6 or 8 station cabbing machine, to a rock saw, and eventually a 2 or 3 headed sphere machine. If I have my way I'll eventually have a 18" rock saw but will be starting out with a 12" or so saw.
With all that said.....Hi!
Also a couple tidbits that I've not seen here yet, as well as comments on things I have seen.

I found this item on this forum, I think it was in a group build thread for an inexpensive cabbing machine design.
Anyhow I looked at it, ran some prices.. looked again and figured that by the time I paid ordered a short bearing manderl/shaft, the pillow bearings and then paid shipping on it,it'd cost me more than what having ACE order a couple of these for me would.
One thing ACE's item description does not say, is that the bearings are bushing type bearings and not ball bearings.
The 5/8" mandrel is threaded 1/2" on both ends, and for all intents and purposes I am content with it. It will suffice for my intended application, for my flat lap. For future projects I'll order the mandrel specific to the application, 6 or 8 station cabbing machine or rock saw, but for my lap it'll work nicely.
Pulley size will be determined when I figure out what motor I will be using. Currently waiting on a motor to arrive, and have a couple old ones sitting about the garage.
I will have to order ball bearing pillow bearings but I'll throw these pillow bearings in a box or put them on ebay to recoup some money.
I see a lot of mention of using Crazy Glue for dopping, and posts about people gluing their hands and fingers together. Also mention of left over glue on the fingers.
An ER Doc advised us to keep Neosporin away from the Crazy Glue stitches they put in my sons head, as the petroleum jelly will cause it to break down. Not sure if that'll be of some help to anyone or not. Part of the conversation included that if I ever got Crazy Glue in the eye or something to throw a big old gob of Vaseline in it and work it around. That's not medical advice from myself or the aforementioned Doc, just an offhand statement based upon an off the record conversation during an ER visit.
There was a couple other little things that I'd wanted to say while reading but I've ottally forgotten them.
I guess that's all for now.. Time to go spend some time with the wife and kids, then practice some wire wrapping afterwards.
