I've finally got a minute to post the wraps I've attempted. I started with the groove wrap since it seems to have less opportunity to become forever entangled in the wires. Seemingly. I'm still having a hard time getting my binding wire started tightly (which in my case is just for the bail - I can't imagine if I was doing a groove-less wrap!). I haven't tried taping the wires together yet but my biggest problem is getting the first turn of the binding tight. Not sure if this will be easier with real wire than with this copper filled zebra wire or not.
Ok - enough stalling I guess...
This was the first one I did - I didn't necessarily want the little curly drop downs but I didn't know what to do with the ends once I got there...hence the curlies. I can't figure out how you guys make such perfect little spirals and such smooth curls - if you have any advice - please let me know! This was just a tumbled piece - maybe Michael John's stuff?
Then I did another tumbled piece - but didn't get a picture - very similar to the first though as far as the looks.
The third one I did - I tried to just cut the binding of the bail close enough that it wouldn't show instead of mangling the curlies again. The stone was another one of my first attempts at cabbing - didn't take a very good polish but it was more of a learning stone anyway. Have no idea what it is.
And this was the last one I did - still don't know what to do with those ends as you can see. I will be cutting this curly off and trying to hide the end on the back of the binding I think - I just can't master getting a pretty spiral. The stone actually looks a little better than it does in the photo - it's got some fingerprints, smudges, lint and who knows what else going on with it in the photo.
On all of these I pretty much beat the heck out of the bail - they were not nice smooth loops by the time I finished (not sure they ever were to be honest!) but I'm hoping as I learn how to get the bindings started I won't mash them up so bad. I tried Adrian's suggestion after I had done the first one. I brought the back side of the bail down (ends of the wires) and started the binding with all four wires which helped my bindings to not be quite so messy and bulging out at the top where I brought the bail wires down later. I was hoping it would help the start of the bind though. Need to practice more!
Thanks for looking!
