For those of you who use hydraulic fluid for cutting, how is it on your skin?
I went to buy another $20 gallon of light mineral oil and was looking at alternatives. Tractor hydraulic fluid is $35 for 5 gallons, so it's quite a bit cheaper.
My experience with auto hydraulic fluid is that it is pretty rough on the hands. Is the same true for the tractor fluid?
Thanks! Chuck

I use the tractor fluid and like it. It doesn't bother my skin, but then I'm pretty thick skined. ;D Be sure to get a lightweight oil.

I used a general hydraulic fluid that I purchased at home depot for about $10 a gallon. It became dirty faster than mineral oil and in winter it would become very think and even turn to jell when really cold. It did not bother my skin at all. Now use mineral oil. I paid $9.00 a gallon for my first 5 gallon bucket but that price included the bucket. If I had to pay $20 a gallon I would go back to the Hydraulic fluid.

Thanks Curt and Pup!
I should be able to find an oil dealer in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area that will sell mineral oil, but the online yellow pages aren't much help. I either find fuel oil dealers, motor oil, or JiffyLube. As far as I can tell, I should be asking for technical grade light white mineral oil or paraffin oil. Got any other advice on how to find a dealer? I'd much rather pay $9/gallon or less!!!

Chuck, I haven't been able to find any mineral oil in my area either, except for food grade at $13.00 a gallon. I use an AW32 hydralic fluid. It's a 10 to 12 wgt oil and works good. Most any lubricant supplier or auto parts house should have it.
