Here are some pieces that my boys and I have collected in the past six months. The first two are of the purple agate that we recently collected. One is a close up shot to show details. The next two are of what I believe are quartz crystals in a very crumbly matrix. Now we're getting into some bog agates that the kiddos and I found. The first one is a HUGE 25 lb chunk that a friend cut in half for my oldest son. The next photo is of a fist sized chunk my youngest found. This is one of my finds. I love the color in it! This is the very first piece of Pet. wood that I ever found. Found it sticking partially out of the bank of a dry creek and dug it out. This is a big green something that I can't identify. Any help on identifying this one would be appreciated. The sticky finger test for opal works with this one so I'm thinking it may be common opal? Well, that's it for now. Thanks for letting me share. Nice! I especially like the blue and the banded. What's the sticky finger test?
For some reason I keep thinking "stinky finger" test. LOL

Chuck, don't discount that test! It can yield very important conclusions, very valuable for the decision-making process!

I'm located in Oregon. The sticky finger test is something a local geologist showed me. What you do is lick the tip of your finger and touch it to the stone, lift your finger and touch it back down to the same spot. If it feels like your finger is sticking its probably a common opal. It had something to do with the absorbtion of water.... The bog agates are some of my favorites. I found the stripey one somewhere between Juntura and Stinkingwater, Oregon. (And no, they don't stay outside but I DO have a great big chunk of plume agate from the claim I got to go to.) ;D The big green chunk came from the Hell's Canyon area near Oxbow Dam. (If that helps)
