I suspect this has been tried - or at least hashed through to the point of realizing it won't work - already but I've got an idea I'd like some thoughts on. I have an 8" Ameritool grinder like this - www.ameritool-inc.com/store/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=5. The flat plate is held in place by the knob ended screw in the middle. My idea is to make something like this - sorry for the badly drawn graphic - would be a good time to have something like AUTO-CAD (not that I'd remember how to use it anyway ) but all I've got is Paint.- to be able to do some slight concave edges. I'd also like to use this to polish the inside lip of a cut wine bottle (turn the cut end of the bottle over the top of the cone, letting the inside lip sit on the cone where it will be somewhat uniformly polished). I'll use an extra long bolt through the top and out the bottom to connect to the grinder and was hoping to cut SIC discs with adhesive to cover the outside of the cone. Would this work? The only material I can come up with to use is wood. I thought I'd see if there is a woodworking shop around here that could turn a piece like this for me once I figure out measurements and such. I'd love to hear if someone has tried this and whether it's a disaster in the making or not. I'm guessing someone has come up with some better idea to do what I'm trying to do. Thanks for looking!

as far as i am concerned....if you can cover it in an abrasive....and it mounts and runs true on your machine....you can grind stuff with it ;D.
the only concern i would have is the wood getting a little wet....and maybe swelling a little....that could cause a little wobble wobble...and thats not good for any machines rotating parts.
you dimension it....and i will make you one out of aluminum...or wood...whatever ya want.
since im not familiar with adhesives for belts....i cant help there....that may make a difference in actual material used for your cone idea.....others will probably weigh in.....kev.

You would need to keep weight down and run balanced and centered.

Kev - I hadn't thought of the water making a wooden piece swell - but probably something I need to consider. I also hadn't really considered aluminum. Well, I had considered something along those lines - but more in the lines of finding something pre-made in that shape. I've been all up and down Lowes aisles though and didn't find much to work with really. As far as having something like this made - for some reason the only material that crossed my mind was wood. I really appreciate your offer to make something for me and might take you up on it if I can come up with measurements that I feel confident in - and if you let me pay you for material and your time. I know you've got a growing boy to feed at your house! I may see what I can come up with measurement wise and check back with you. I'd think aluminum might be a better option vs wood - but will look into what my options will be on getting the abrasive to stick. Dr Joe - thanks for the links - I've bookmarked several of those for future reference. Trying to put together options as I'm not ready to give up on the idea yet.

You can seal wood, so that's not a problem. It would be good to see this project come to fruition.
