I checked on my first load today with my new lortone and the slurry was a muddy brown color, not the color that I had normally seen in my small tumbler, so I cleaned the rocks and tumbler and recharched it, but does anyone know what may have caused this so I don't waste so much grit the next time? Already only after 24 hours the gemstones are looking better so I was thinking it was just all the matrix and stuff coming off, but thinking has gotten me in trouble before.

when i got my new qt66 9 days ago and started 2 new loads - 1 of dalmation stones and the other a mix of stones - i had what looked like a rootbeer float in the mix of stones after 2 days when i peeked in on them. i had to remove the thick froth off the top with a paper towel, the water was brown and i couldn't see any grit anywhere so i completely recharged too and it hasn't happened again. was that froth related to that "gas" i've seen often referred to? what kind of stones are you tumbling? maybe it's got to do with the kind of stones.

mostly mixed gemstones, amethyst, quartz, emerald, moonstone, citrine, garnet, bloodstone, and some jasper, maybe it was that? mine also was frothy and did resemble a rootbeer float, but there was grit on the bottom of the barrell.

I have run into that a couple of times as well, usually by stage 3 though things look normal. I attributed it to Iron content..but I am a amatuer and perhaps Doc or someone else can shed some more light on this.

Just checked my new 3lber and i had a foam build up also ,this is phase three 500 grit. Had nothing like this in 60/90 or 120/220 but these steps where done in my 45c which was use alot before. wonder if it is to do with the barrels being new.

I ham having the same problem, except the slurry isn't brown.
In my 3# barrel has foam and in my#6 barrel is a buildup of girit on the bottom. Both seem to be doing what they are suppose to do, so I haven't really worried to much about it. But I am curious as to why this happens and what, if anything, can or should be done.

Well this hapens to me sometimes when I put in to much grit. When this hapens to me I just empty out the barrel in to something and mix up the grit. If you do this for about to days it will not happen after that. Well good luck.

I blame it on iron content too. As for the the froth, I have it often in my loads, but it doesn't seem to prevent grinding so I leave it. My loads have turned out okay and nothing's blown up so I just stumble along assuming it's okay. Actually that's pretty much the way I approach life and so far it's going okay too.

;D Good morning to you all. I've just checked my first batch of beach rock and after 3 days in coarse it also has grey frothy bubbles on top. I'm thinking this is because it's a new barrell. I see that several of you are using your tumblers for the first time, too...but I'm only a newbie, so perhaps someone with more experiece can give us the real lowdown.
See ya. Linda

I started my second batch and let it run a day and found out that most of the grit and water had leaked out, thread tape is wonderful for sealing the toy drums. I ran the batch for a week and noticed that the tumbler was getting a littl sluggish, so I decided to open the container and if I had let it go the weekend I would not have been able to get the stones out. The brown slurry had gotten so thick it reminded me of the muddy muck at the bottom of the lake. The stones were rounded to begin with and I was pleased with their shape and size so I went on to the second phase.
