I have a 10" frantom saw, running mineral oil. How do I know when to change the oil? Its pretty dirty looking now but the saw seems to be cutting fine.

As long as the saw is cutting good, I wouldn't worry much. I found that after the gunk built up enough to cover the edge of the blade, I had to dress it often. That is when I changed the oil.

In my ten inch saw the oil becomes dirty quickly. I keep running it until the oil gets to the consistency of ketchup or until enough rock chips are in the oil that interfere with the blade moving freely. Rock chips are normally due to cutting lower grade rock not an oil issue. I do filter the oil using a paper grocery sack so I can use the oil again.

You could just change at ten thousand miles...........but then it only holds a wee bit more than a pint, so you could change it more often. I cut all of the material I posted from our Oregon trip on my ten inch Frantom the other day, and had to clean it out twice using Diacut in water.. I only put about half of what I cut in the photograph. Woody

The Frantom has a small sump so uses less oil but it will sludge up faster also. Change it when it gets dirty and filter what you remove for topping off.
