I found a rock on Nantasket beach about a year ago. Most of the rocks I find there are granite or quartz, some jasper maybe but once in a while I do find really cool rocks. This is nothing like what I have ever found. It looks like it has a lot of mica and the coloring made me think that it was quartz with the yellow banding being citrine but when I cut and ground it, it was very soft. A table knife can score it and make it flake. But when I smoothed it out a little on the grinder, it seems to be more sturdy. Gold vein came to mind but I am also delusional ;D Thanks for any suggestions.

Many times you'll see a micaceous shist incorporated into dolomite. The lack of hardness and the mica would seem to suggest what you've found might fall into that category.....Mel
