Howdy folks, Just a few nature pics from the last day or so. Thanks for looking....Mel These little Geckos from the Mediterranean region are all over my deck at night catching bugs around the windows. Cute little buggers about five or six inches long. I'm really enjoying all the dragonflies but man, I'm having to learn a whole bunch of new identifications ( and sometimes we think rocks and minerals are difficult to learn) These are male and female ( green one) eastern Pond hawks. Dragonfiles have cool names too. pondhawks, dashers, skimmers, widows, darners, cruisers etc. Sound like car names *L*. This one is small and I haven't been able to ID it yet. In dragonflies, males and females are usually different so it makes it that much harder. And a couple of butterflies: Male checkered White: And a favorite of mine, a Pipevine Swallowtail taking a drink from a seep:

Just as long as the Geckos don't try to sell insurance to the Dragonflies, I think you'll have peace...

Dragonflies are a big favorite of mine. We always have tons of them cruising around the yard. I saw the most brilliant blue one the other day. Most of our dragonflies are big bruising fellows (or gals). This little blue one was so petite. I need to find a local ID book.
Thanks for sharing all these great photos!

Titania: Their are some outstanding Dragonfly ID sites on the web if you just google US dragonflies or dragonfly identification. I just put in Texas dragonflies and got a ton of wonderful sites.....Mel

Mel, I love these pics. Not just from a nature standpoint but from an artistic view. It looks like they were all posed. I keep staring at that dragonfly hanging by just a thin stem and the colors of the white butterfly on a purple flower and you can just feel the texture of the stone and grout that the Gecko is on.
I hope you don't mind if I share these pics with a friend. She loves dragonflies.

Boy you have a lot of variety to the wildlife there. Great pics. How did the Mediterranean lizards get here?

Tony: Texas has several species of established exotic lizards that mostly came into the country on freight ships. Folks we bought this house from came from the Gulf Coast so we figure the little lizards hitchhiked in on their furniture shipment. Not a bad thing though as they are cute and really beneficial little bug eaters. One of my goals is to go down to the extreme south gulf coast and see the big colonies of Spiny Iguanas which are a really cool and very large lizard....Mel

In San Angelo, we had a ton of the little geckos and they were fine, except when the cat would bring them in to play and they would escape and be so scared, they would die, dry and stay right were they were hiding until we found them (behind picture frames, stove, etc). I love the variety of dragon flies and the butterfly's there! Thanks for sharing! Fran

Great pics Mel! Hey we have those lil Med geckos here too. I was told they were introduced to the urban areas here long ago for insect control.
They can be noisy lil critters, the ones camped out in the garage behind our washer anyway lol.
That last flutterby is a beaut!
