I found this on my driveway this morning. Does anyone know what its type might be and what he might eat? I want to keep him alive for a few days until my grandson comes over on the 3rd. Bob

Well, to me it looks like you've found a powderpost beetle (Black Polycaon stouti). They like wood and eat leaves or ants. Don't worry too much about feeding him. Give him a piece of wood and some green tree leaves and he should live long enough for your grandson to see it alive.

Nope. That's a California Prionus Beetle, one of the largest beetles in California and one of the Long Horned Beetle group. They also can be one of the noisiest making screeching sounds by rubbing their elytra. Sometimes called Tile Horned beetles too. I know the larval stage which spends a long time maturing, feeds on oak roots and wood. Don't know what the adults eat. They do have strong mandibles. I know some adults in similar groups may eat soft bodied insects or be attracted to sap. You might try feeding it some cutworms or something of that nature......Mel
