After Autumn and I visited Luray Caverns (see my other thread) we spent the night and then headed home via the northern part of Skyline Drive. I was excited because the forecast was for clear sunny weather, the only other time I was there it was fogged in, but the weatherman was way off. We had quite a bit of haze and fog. Most of the views east were completely blanked off. We read a sign that the Shenandoah National Park has 900 native wild flower, which is more than is found in all of Europe, so we decided to start looking for as many as we could find. I saw a yucca and figured it had been planted but I finally found a ranger who knew what he was talking about and they are native to the area. Despite the clouds and fog we both enjoyed the drive and Autumn had to stop at every outlook to take pictures. We took about 150 of them between us. lol
Here is one of the clearer views we had.
We did a small hike, about 1 mile, which is about as long as my 8 year old's attention span. We were hoping to see a bear but no luck.
This is one of my favorite wild flowers. Its latin name is cimicifuga racemosa but most know it as Fairy Candles. They nearly glow at dusk.
This was my favorite flower there. No idea what its called but its structure is different than any flower I've seen before.
This is a sedum and it was growing right out of a rock cliff about 15 feet up. I guess that explains its common name stonecrop.
Autumn took this picture of me on a rock outcropping. She is very good with a camera.
Some of the rocks there just to keep this post in line with this site. ;D
One of our last views before heading down the mountain.
Next time I go back I want to go more south and hike to some of the waterfalls in the park. I'll also make sure the weather will be better.
