Rather than buy jump rings, I know I can make my own. Saw a little tutorial, but, it left out one very important item. What wire would work best? I intend to mostly use sterling silver, sometimes gold. I am thinking 20 ga, half hard would be good, or would it? I know I am going to want something sturdy, that will hold its' shape. For those of you that make your own jump rings, what would you advise? Maybe 18 ga? What seems to work best for you?
Thank you; Mike

I've worked with jumprings, but haven't cut my own. Are you using them just as a bail or to actually make weaves
If you are weaving, Size does matter, it depends on many factors: what you are making, what weave you are doing and the use it will get.
If you can weld them closed, that's best - if not, again it depends what you are using them for

I use 20 and 18G for my jump rings. Size depends on what I'm going to use them for

Ooops, sorry. that bit of info would be helpful, I am sure. I am using jump rings for attaching earrings and pendants in the cases where I do not wire wrap and make a bail. I would say that , typically, there is not going to be a large weight issue.

Mike, I would say to make a split ring for a bail...this is where you wrap the wire around a round object a two or three times and then slide if off. The cut ends should be filed (finernail file works). This will give you a sturdy ring to hang anything on. As for earrings, I would use 20g (21g) half hard round wire and use a small round object (mandrel). The smaller the inside of the jump ring, the sturdier the ring itself is. Aleast, this is what I have found.

thank you all for your replies. 20g half hard round does sound like it would be ideal.
