If the motor is "continuous duty" rated you could build a tumbler. My Highland Park 40 lb. had a 1/3 hp, 1725 motor. You could also use a 1/3 hp to run most cab machines, arbors, trim saws to 10" or so.

It would be fine for driving the old style hold by hand flat lap used with grit. You would pulley the speed down to 500 or so to not throw your grit. The diamond disc laps are usually variable speed to either 2200 or 3450 rpm.

Robotic rock separator (may need a few other parts too ) Make an arbor and mount 4 - 1.5" diamond wheels side-by-side for a 6" wide grinding wheel and be the envy of the rock polishing world. Drive system for the rock feed on your home-built 36" slab saw. Use to drive the auger to add grit to your DIY 48" multi-layer flat lap. Use it to drive a fan to keep you cool while your working on these other projects. Set it on a shelf in plain view so you can tell allyour RTH buddies what your ' going' to do with it. And if your Dad is bringing this good stuff home, maybe you should start hinting at other pieces (like pillow block bearings (think air handlers for large A/C systems), 18" - 24" plate steel discs, old belt grinders (for their wheels), arc welder, lathe (for making a rock lathe), etc. P.S. I hope you got him a really nice Father's Day card. Dr Joe .

If I remember right, my funky old 14" drop saw has a 1/3 hp motor. It is a very versatile size.
