My wife's cactus is blooming. Anyone have an idea as to what it is? Bob

Not a cactus but rather a succulent from Africa and India. that one looks like Stapelia variegata from South Africa. They're blowfly pollinated so sometimes the flowers are a bit stinky....Mel

Yup, Stapelia.......had a few myself. I just love them, stinky or not. The common name is carrion flower because of the smell.

Thanks for the identification. I guess I should alert my wife so she doesn't go wild and crazy by getting more because they are so beautiful! Bob

We have a big lily....Voo Doo Lily.....has a very similar colour, and pattern, and trust me, you do not want to sniff one. I have never seen the Stapelia, but the smell of the Voo Doo Lily is like something dead. Woody

I've never seen any blowflies around. Would wasps go for this plant? I have (and don't disturb) many wasps nests around. I appreciate their carnivorous nature. They sure keep the caterpillars off my apple tree. Bob

That is one neat looking plant. Bobby, since it is in bloom, does it smell as Mel described?

I've been reluctant to stick my nose in it. I'll go do it now. YUCKKKKK!!!!!! It is exactly as described. Fortunately it is in a corner of the front outside entryway so you have to deliberately expend some effort to get to it. Its going to take a few minutes to get that smell out of my mind. Bob

Bobby: Stapeliads are actually quite a large group of plants. I used to have a greenhouse full and flowering time was kind of gross because of all the flies. My largest, Stapelia gigantia if I'm remembering right, had huge meat red flowers almost 12 inches wide. Beautiful but what a gigantic stinker!.....Mel
